The 2017 Audi Q2 1.4 TFSI Design was significant as Audi's smallest SUV at the time, sitting beneath the Q3 and introducing a distinctive new 'Polygonal Design' language. The styling was deliberately different from Audi's larger SUVs, with sharp geometric lines and a particularly interesting detail, the front grille contains 34 individual polygons. Audi's design chief Marc Lichte also said the sculpted indentation running along the doors was inspired by the legendary 1985 Audi Ur-quattro, giving the compact Q2 a subtle link to Audi's rally heritage.

Under the bonnet, the 1.4 TFSI used Cylinder-on-Demand technology, allowing the engine to shut down cylinders 2 and 3 during light-load driving to improve fuel efficiency. Despite being a compact 1.4-litre engine, it produced 110kW and 250Nm, enough for a claimed 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 212km/h.
