The 2021 Volkswagen Polo 85TSI Comfortline may be a small hatchback, but it packs some surprisingly sophisticated engineering. Its 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder produces 85kW and 200Nm, with peak torque available from just 2,000rpm to 3,500rpm. Despite its compact size, the Polo is based on Volkswagen's MQB architecture, shared with larger Volkswagen models, helping give it a surprisingly spacious cabin and 351-litre boot. It can also accelerate from 0-100km/h in around 9.5 seconds, while its official combined fuel consumption is approximately 5.0L/100km.
One of the more interesting features is its 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, which is fundamentally different from a conventional automatic. Volkswagen's DSG uses two separate gearsets and clutches, allowing the next gear to be pre-selected before the shift occurs, Volkswagen says gear changes can take less than four-hundredths of a second.
