The 2016 BMW 318i Sport Line has a surprisingly unusual engine for a BMW 3 Series, beneath the bonnet is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine producing 100kW and 220Nm. This compact B38 engine was part of BMW's move toward downsizing, yet it still delivered the smooth, responsive character expected of a 3 Series. The 220Nm of torque arrives from just 1,250rpm, while the 8-speed automatic helps the 1,425kg sedan achieve 0-100km/h in around 9.1 seconds. Official combined fuel consumption was an impressive 5.4L/100km, giving the 318i an interesting combination of rear-wheel-drive dynamics and small-engine efficiency.
