Its hand-built M139 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 310kW and 500Nm, making it one of the most powerful series-production four-cylinder engines of its era. An unusual engineering detail is that the engine is rotated 180 degrees compared with its predecessor, positioning the turbocharger and exhaust system toward the rear of the engine bay to create shorter, more direct intake and exhaust routing.

The CLA 45 S also has technology normally associated with dedicated performance cars. Its AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system uses AMG Torque Control, with independently controlled clutches capable of distributing torque between the individual rear wheels.
